They say that living a healthy lifestyle can help contribute to longevity. But there are so many components to what makes up a true healthy lifestyle.
Even the most fit individuals forget to look at themselves holistically and treat the mind, body and soul. We need to nurture all three to attain maximum peace and well being.
Maintaining a healthy body weight, building lean muscle mass, stretching and mastering balance are all important for everyone, the young as well as the aging.
But what about our mental health? At different stages in life and especially as we age, undesired events can bring on feelings of anxiety, depression, loneliness and other tough emotions. We have to find ways to manage the bad as well as the good. Do not let unfavorable thoughts get the best of you. It is so important that we learn how to slow down and deep breathe. Learn to practice mindfulness which is making a conscious effort to remain in the present and enjoy the moment. We have to care for the whole body from head to toe, inside and out.
Actually, it's been proven that exercise is instrumental in the maintenance of good mental health. Exercise releases chemicals like endorphins and serotonin that improve moods. You don't have to over do it, just 15 to 30 minutes of at least moderate moving can get you on track to the positive benefits. Walking, running, cycling, yoga and swimming are some of the ways you could incorporate physical activity into your routine.
Most importantly, just remember if you find yourself having a difficult time coping with your thoughts or feelings, reach out to someone. There are so many others going through similar emotions so do not be ashamed to talk to someone or seek professional medical help. Being healthy extends further than the outside appearance, so take care of all of you!
