As you age, if you have adult children or other family members and caregivers in your life, one of the most difficult times during the process is the feeling of the loss of control. You probably didn't even see it coming. All of the sudden you may realize that your kids and/or others are telling you how, when or what to do. They say they notice that maybe you're a little more forgetful lately or need some extra help. Well you are used to being the rock of the family, the one everyone depends on and now you realize, you are being corrected, asked to relax and let someone else help you.
Change is tough. It is so hard to accept that you are beginning a new time in your life and that it is okay. Its very common to have a difficult time embracing all of the natural and necessary cycles of our journey. Each one is just as important and valuable as the last. We are an infant twice and an adult only once. So we need nurturing in our early years as well as later in life.
Absolutely, it is really challenging to listen to someone you have raised and protected for so long now begin to make suggestions, take charge or maybe even total control some of your day to day activities and decisions. You may not understand it at the time but at some point we will all need help and someone to look out for our best interests.
If you're among the fortunate to have a loving family unit or supportive caregiver in your life to help you when it is your time to step back, embrace it and accept it. It is truly a blessing and and their love for you will provide you the safety, and comfort you need to happily live out your senior years!
